Periodontal disease, which is also called gum disease, can have serious long-term consequences, like tooth loss and bone loss. In its early stage (gingivitis), it can be reversed with improved oral hygiene and treatments like deep cleanings. Once it progresses to more advanced stages of the disease (called periodontitis), it can only be managed, not reversed. If you notice the symptoms early, you can avoid long-term issues.

Here are three major signs of gum disease:

  1. Bleeding
  2. Irritated gums bleed easily so if you notice blood when you brush or floss, it’s a sign you have unhealthy gums. If you bleed when you floss, you may want to stop. Don’t! Bleeding is a sign you need to gently floss every day. As your gum health improves, the bleeding should stop.

  3. Red, Swollen Gums
  4. Healthy gums should be painless, pink, and firm, not red and puffy. Gum disease is an infection of the gums. When bacteria builds up, your soft tissues become inflamed, red, and swollen. Gum disease can be painless at first, or you may notice some tenderness.

  5. Persistent Bad Breath
  6. The bacteria that cause gum disease produce a strong, almost sulphuric odor. You may also experience a bad taste in your mouth unrelated to anything you’ve eaten. If you have chronic bad breath or an unpleasant taste you can’t get rid of, you may have gum disease. Start improving your oral hygiene and make an appointment with a dentist. Promoting healthier gums will improve your breath.
