What kind of mouthguard do I need?
Our practice provides three different custom oral appliances to meet our patient’s needs.
- Athletic Mouthguards — Patients who participate in aggressive sports like football and soccer can protect their teeth from dental trauma by wearing an athletic mouthguard during practices and games.
- Nightguards for Bruxism — Patients who routinely grind their teeth at night should consider investing in a durable, custom nightguard to protect their teeth from damaging each other while they sleep.
- Sleep Apnea Appliances — Our sleep apnea appliances can be a great alternative to CPAP machines. These appliances fit over the front teeth and hold the patient’s jaw slightly forward, keeping their airway open throughout the night.

How are custom mouthguards created?
All we need to create your custom mouthguard are impressions of your teeth! This can be completed at the end of a routine visit, or we would be happy to schedule a quick additional appointment for you to have impressions taken as well. These measurements will be sent to an offsite lab, and your custom mouthguard will arrive at our office in about a week or two. We will have you come in to try on your new mouthguard and make any necessary adjustments to ensure it fits perfectly. Then, you’re free to take it home and begin using it!

Are custom mouthguards expensive?
Custom mouthguards tend to be more of a financial investment than a one-size mouthguard you can buy online or at a store due to the fact that they are custom made for your unique smile. While they may cost more upfront, we find that patients are more likely to wear custom mouthguards due to how comfortable they are, which means the teeth are better protected, and their chances of needing costly restorative dental services in the future are lower.
